Origen (Origin) :

Se encuentra testimoniado es que en 1844 el merengue era cantado y bailado en los campos de batalla donde el pueblo dominicano luchaba contra las tropas intervencionistas haitianas. Este baile surge así, en medio de la lucha por la independencia de Santo Domingo como reflejo de específicas condiciones socio-económicas.

This dance arises this way, in the middle of the fight for the independence of Santo Domingo as reflex of specific socio-economic conditions.

Evidentemente, el Merengue, que empareja con los años de nacimiento de la República y las primeras manifestaciones culturales propias, se desarrolla junto a la identidad como nación, cultura y raza de la República Dominicana, con influencias españolas, africanas y autóctonas.

Evidently, the Meringue, which catches up with the years of birth of the Republic and the first cultural own manifestations, develops close to the identity as nation, culture and race of the Dominican Republic, with Spanish, African and autochthonous influences.

Con la conciencia nacional, se mira hacia lo propio y la sociedad va dirigiendo su atención al nuevo baile que practican los campesinos dominicanos – tanto que los bailes de salón extranjeros van desapareciendo poco a poco –. El Merengue se convirtió en el baile nacional de La República Dominicana.

Difusión (Diffusion) :

Por 1850 el nuevo ritmo se desplazaba de la preferencia de los sectores populares, pero es atacado violentamente por las clases "altas". Se le acusa de ser baile de "clases inferiores", inmoral, vulgar, nocivo.

La élite urbana dominicana lo calificó como baile indecente o danza maldita y a pesar de su auge entre las masas populares, la clase alta no aceptó el merengue por mucho tiempo, por su vinculación con la música africana. En realidad, otras danzas dominicanas de origen negro no fueron atacadas por su carácter de danzas rituales que hacía que su práctica se restringiera a unos pocos lugares o días al año, con un alcance o difusión entre la población muy limitado.

El merengue, por el contrario, por su carácter de danza de regocijo, se introdujo con más facilidad en los lugares de fiestas generales y por esto la reacción en contra fue fuerte. Luego, otra de las causas que pesaron sobre el repudio y ataques contra el merengue fueron los textos literarios que lo acompañan, generalmente subidos de tono.

Las primeras composiciones del merengue son atribuidas al coronel Juan Bautista Alfonseca (1810-1875); él fue quien llevó el Merengue al pentagrama por primera vez, recogiendo lo que el pueblo cantaba -sobre todo historias de la vida cotidiana- y componiendo sus temas de acuerdo con la rítmica que el pueblo practicaba.A principios del presente siglo músicos cultos hicieron una gran campaña para la introducción de esta danza en los salones.

Sin embargo, su éxito no fue inmediato ya que, a pesar de esta gran difusión y propaganda, no se aceptó de lleno el merengue en lo que se llamaba "la buena sociedad dominicana" hasta que en una familia de la "aristocracia" de Santiago, en ocasión de la celebración de una fiesta, solicitaron a Luis Alberti que compusiera un merengue con "letras decentes".

Solo a partir de ese momento, comenzó a diseminarse esta danza.Al diseminarse el merengue por todo el ámbito nacional, produjo, como toda manifestación cultural, variantes, que reflejan el manejo de los elementos culturales hecho al acomodo y conveniencia de algunos musicos.
